Description
ENRIQUE GALWEY GARCÍA (Barcelona, 1864 - 1931).
"Landscape".
Watercolor on paper.
Signed in the lower left corner.
Measurements: 17 x 24 cm; 31 x 37 cm (frame).
Painter mainly landscape painter, he was formed in the School of La Lonja of Barcelona. He began to paint with Joaquín Vayreda in Olot, forming part of his famous pictorial school. Vayreda encouraged him to travel to Paris, where he learned from the Barbizon school and the impressionists. He became known in 1885 at the Exhibition of the Center of Watercolorists of Barcelona, and since then he alternated the competitions in his hometown with exhibitions in Madrid, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Paris, London, Venice and Buenos Aires. He participated in several National Exhibitions of Fine Arts, where he obtained second medal in 1897 and 1906, and first medal in 1915. In the Exhibition of 1922 he occupied a room of honor with fifty-eight works. Together with Modesto Urgell and Luis Graner he founded the Artistic and Literary Society of Catalonia. In the volume "Lo que he visto en casa Parés", of 1934, he collects anecdotes and testimonies related to the art and artists of his time. He is represented in the Prado Museum, the Provincial Museum of Lugo and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona. In this landscape, of great lyrical charge, the diffused and long brushstroke in the pearly sky and the pond contrasts with the small touches and generous matter to represent the undergrowth. He works with a diversity of textures to recreate a poetic and arcane atmosphere.
