He studied at the School of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid, and then made a study trip to Rome. From 1885 he participates in the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts, obtaining second medal in, at least, 1885 and 1887. He cultivated works with social themes, history and portraits of famous people. He began to be recognized in the eighties, and painted for the Provincial Council and for the bourgeoisie until he emigrated to Buenos Aires in 1910. Works by Primitivo Álvarez are kept in the Prado Museum, the Provincial Council of León, the Junta de Castilla y León Collection in Valladolid and, in Buenos Aires, in the Centro Región Leonesa and the Museo Histórico Nacional, as well as in important private collections such as López Otero and José Valver.
