This 19th-century painting is modelled on the famous self-portrait created by Murillo around 1670, now in the collection of the National Gallery, London. The master's work was probably painted when Murillo was in his early fifties: his hairline is receding and his moustache is turning grey. He is dressed in black, with a delicate white lace collar known in Spain as a valona. He is looking at us, but his posture is both relaxed and self-assured. This work captures that same pose, but does not introduce the famous frame painted by Murillo, an example of his skill as a painter, because of the trompe l'oeil he achieves.
