Although the Prado Museum itself catalogues Miguel Pidena Montón as "an insufficiently studied painter, specialist in the genre of interior views of museums", we know from the canvas we are now bidding for that he also devoted himself to the genre of genre scenes set in Andalusia in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is a work with a Romantic, costumbrista heritage and a realistic and meticulous execution, centred on the representation of subjects, themes and characters that reflect a new sense of folklore. In this context Miguel Pineda sought to reflect the types and customs of his native land, Andalusia, which make it different and unique, thus vindicating his own roots and, above all, the traditions and ways of dressing and behaving which were threatened by the notable growth of urban areas and the imposition of new fashions brought in from outside. This work demonstrates how art, fundamentally in its pictorial aspect, thus becomes in a certain way a vehicle of expression capable of making regional peculiarities known to the rest of the nation.
