Description

French school; 19th century.
"Female bust.
Alabaster.
Signed in the inferior zone of the base J.B. Carpeaux.
Measurements: 71 x 40 x 35 cm.
Alabaster sculpture depicting a young lady dressed in 19th century fashion. The delicate carving of the piece is notable for the great volume achieved by the sculptor, in particular through the way the cap and the ribbon that the girl wears around her neck are made.
The piece is signed on the base J. B Carpeaux, perhaps in allusion to the painter and sculptor trained by François Rude. Carpeaux won the Prix de Rome in 1854, and in the Italian capital he studied the works of Michelangelo, Donatello and Verrocchio. During his stay in Rome, which lasted until 1861, he acquired a special taste for movement and spontaneity, which he later combined with an aesthetic of Baroque heritage. In 1861 he executed a bust of Princess Mathilde, a work that led him to receive several commissions from Napoleon III. Back in France he worked on the Flora Pavilion and the Opéra Garnier, and also produced models for the Sèvres porcelain factory. He is now represented in the Musée du Louvre, the Musée d'Orsay and the Musée Bouchard in Paris, the Musée de la Chartreuse in Douai, the Musée Départemental de l'Oise in Beauvais, the Musées des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux, Valenciennes and Dijon, the Musée de Berry in Bourges, the Musée du Château de Blois and other public and private collections.
