Description

PETER SELLEMOND (1884 -1942)
"Virgin and Child.
Carved wood.
Signed.
Measurements: 29,5 x 16 x 15 cm.
Round sculpture representing a Virgin and Child, although the scene is based on a great representative tradition, the author has managed to capture the essence through a completely personal aesthetic. The canon is elongated in such a way that the work stands out for its great stylisation. Furthermore, the Child is lying on the mantle that covers the straw that acts as a base, which seems to have been inspired by the representation of the nativity scene.
Peter Sellemond was an Austrian sculptor and carver, the son of a Tyrolean farmer, who was apprenticed to the cabinetmaker and altarpiece maker Josef Meraner in Klausen and completed his master's examination in 1902 with Josef Bachlechner the Elder. From 1909 to 1911 he was a student at the state commercial school in Innsbruck and in 1911 he took six months of painting lessons with Alfons Siber. Sellemond took the entrance examination to the Munich Academy of Art in 1914, but did military service because of the First World War. After the war, Sellemond founded his own studio in Hall and was represented at exhibitions as a member of the Tyrolean Artists' Association.
