Two young Asians are seated on a plank floor. Their bronze skins contrast with this background of amber slats. The line is sinuous but stylised, sparing the forms in favour of a minimal but suggestive expression. The faces, melancholic yet peaceful, seem distant to us as they carry a genuine mystery. However, this painting does not belong to nineteenth-century exoticism, colourful and trivial, but to a more sober and conceptual aesthetic, in keeping with inter-war trends.
