Bohol is one of the most recognized provinces of the Philippines. In this particular case the artist shows a scene of the city where the vegetation has a leading role. The work responds to a need to show the customs and popular characteristics that describe Philippine society. During the 19th and early 20th century, costumbrismo was an artistic trend that achieved great recognition. In the case of Philippine painters, this theme was of great importance, since despite being a Spanish colony, there was a great lack of knowledge of both its population and its customs.
