The Catalangans are the indigenous tribes of the Philippines mostly of Malay and Mongolian origin. Known for their self-sufficiency, they were located in the northern part of the island of Luzon. The work responds to a need to show the customs, and popular characteristics that describe Philippine society. During the 19th and early 20th century, costumbrismo was an artistic trend, which achieved great recognition. In the case of Philippine painters, this theme was of great importance, since despite being a Spanish colony, there was a great lack of knowledge of both its population and its customs.
