It is probable that the signature is that of Captain Eduardo Moreno Esteller, a Spanish soldier stationed in the Philippines. The work responds to a need to show the customs and popular characteristics that describe Philippine society. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, costumbrismo was an artistic trend that achieved great recognition. In the case of Philippine painters, this theme was of great importance, since despite being a Spanish colony, there was a great lack of knowledge of both its population and its customs.
