Description

CUSTODIO MARCO SAMPER (Valencia, 1925 - Huelva, 2003)"Composition", 1961.Mixed media on card.Signed and dated in the lower left corner.Size: 10 x 8 cm; 22,5 x 28,5 cm (frame). The painter, set designer and muralist Custodio Marco Samper was born in Valencia in 1925. From an early age he attended classes given by Manuel Hernández Doce, father of the painter Manuel Hernández Mompó. In 1941 he enrolled at the San Carlos School of Fine Arts in Valencia, where he shared his studies with work as a set designer. In 1947 he was one of the founders of Grupo Z, which brought together the Valencian artistic creation of that time, all of them encouraged by Rafael Pérez Contel, as well as an esteemed friend of Custodio. His training was completed with several grants from the Directorate General of Fine Arts and in 1966 he made a trip to Paris on a grant from the Juan March Foundation. His first works were figurative in character, but he later turned his work towards informalist painting and finally became one of the leading followers of constructivist painting in Spain. For nearly thirty years he was a professor of drawing in Madrid, a job he combined with that of a painter, taking part in various solo and group exhibitions. Among them we can highlight those held in the Sala "Los Madrazo" Madrid 1953 and Sala del Prado del Ateneo de Madrid 1958, and in the Galleries "Val i 30", Valencia 1968 and "Al-Hanax", Valencia 1991. His presence as a representative of Spain at the IX Biennial of Alexandria in 1972 was also significant.
