In the decade of the nineties, the painting of Fernando Sánchez Calderón is resolved in an abstraction in which the bands and floating blocks prevail, like the one we show here, immersed in a metaphysical atmosphere.
He received his artistic training at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Madrid, where he graduated, and later obtained his doctorate from the University of Salamanca, where he worked as a professor in the Faculty of Fine Arts. Between 1970 and 1975 he received a scholarship from the Spanish Institute of Emigration and in 1982 he obtained a scholarship for the Investigation of New Expressive Forms from the Ministry of Culture. His first creations are framed within the figuration, being his work known in the mid-seventies after being selected to participate in the Biennial of Sao Paulo in 1977. In the eighties his painting is oriented towards abstraction and is influenced, in the first years of the decade, by abstract expressionism. He had his first individual exhibition in 1974 at the Stadium Gallery in Valladolid, and later exhibited in Segovia, Almagro, Madrid, Santander, and many others. He has participated in important group exhibitions, among which include: Contemporary Spanish Painting (1974) at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon (Portugal), III International Cairo Biennial (1988) in Egypt and XIII Salón de los 16 (1993) at the Velázquez Palace in Madrid's Retiro Park.
